This is the premise Ekkta Ahuja of Tejomaya Architects & Interior Designers sets out to test in Soul & Space, a 5,000-square-foot residence at the iconic RK Studios in Chembur, Mumbai. Originally two adjacent 3.5 BHK apartments, the home was reconceived as a unified 5 BHK layout for a well-travelled, design-conscious family. Structural walls were reworked, sightlines refined, and the resulting plan reads less as two apartments stitched together than as a single continuous narrative of layered, deliberate rooms.
The entry foyer sets the tone for the residence, establishing its design language before the interiors fully unfold. Framed by a dramatic dark-veined stone portal, the space is anchored by a tinted oval mirror and a slender metal console that together create a sense of quiet sophistication. Underfoot, an intricate floor inlay introduces texture and movement, evoking the character of a contemporary tapestry woven into the architecture itself.
Overhead, a sculptural cluster of mirrored spheres lends a sense of visual intrigue, while a brass wall sconce casts a warm, ambient glow across the space. Thoughtfully composed and rich in material contrast, the foyer functions as more than a transitional zone, it serves as an immersive prelude to the home beyond.

The composition is brought into focus by a pair of cobalt blue niches, whose vibrant presence punctuates the otherwise restrained palette and introduces a welcome sense of energy.
What emerges is a room that adapts gracefully to changing needs without compromising on design quality. Every element has been carefully considered to maximise flexibility while maintaining the home’s broader language of material richness, tailored detailing, and understated sophistication.
The parents’ bedroom embraces restraint with quiet confidence. A composition of fluted vertical panels, punctuated by slender mirrored inserts, forms the headboard wall and introduces a subtle sense of rhythm and depth. Anchoring the room is a tufted grey bed paired with a stone topped bedside table whose softened geometry echoes the space’s overall gentleness, creating an atmosphere that feels calm, balanced, and enduring.
