Maximalism, when it works, is not an accumulation of objects but an argument about how much a room can hold before it stops being about the objects at all. It becomes about rhythm, about the way one surface answers another, about the confidence required to let pattern, metal, stone, and texture share the same air without apology.
This is the premise Ekkta Ahuja of Tejomaya Architects & Interior Designers sets out to test in Soul & Space, a 5,000-square-foot residence at the iconic RK Studios in Chembur, Mumbai. Originally two adjacent 3.5 BHK apartments, the home was reconceived as a unified 5 BHK layout for a well-travelled, design-conscious family. Structural walls were reworked, sightlines refined, and the resulting plan reads less as two apartments stitched together than as a single continuous narrative of layered, deliberate rooms.

The entry foyer sets the tone for the residence, establishing its design language before the interiors fully unfold. Framed by a dramatic dark-veined stone portal, the space is anchored by a tinted oval mirror and a slender metal console that together create a sense of quiet sophistication. Underfoot, an intricate floor inlay introduces texture and movement, evoking the character of a contemporary tapestry woven into the architecture itself.
Overhead, a sculptural cluster of mirrored spheres lends a sense of visual intrigue, while a brass wall sconce casts a warm, ambient glow across the space. Thoughtfully composed and rich in material contrast, the foyer functions as more than a transitional zone, it serves as an immersive prelude to the home beyond.
The experience is immediate and intentional, signalling a residence that values atmosphere as much as aesthetics, where every detail is designed to be felt, experienced, and remembered.
Beyond the foyer, the living and dining spaces unfold along one of the home’s most compelling sightlines. A deep-toned sectional and a pair of sculptural swivel chairs anchor the foreground, while a procession of linear pendants draws the eye toward the dining area and the bespoke crockery wall beyond. Unifying the composition is a slender dark inlay that curves gracefully across the pale stone floor, acting less as ornament and more as a subtle guide through the space. The result is a sequence that feels deliberate and fluid, where architecture, furniture, and movement are woven into a single spatial narrative.

The living room is anchored by a faceted dark sideboard crowned with an oversized circular mirror, creating a focal point that feels both sculptural and composed. Soft grey textured wall panels articulated with slender brass inlays establish a quiet architectural rhythm across the space. Against this restrained backdrop, carefully curated elements including a pale bouclé lounger, gilded decorative objects and layered textiles appear as considered accents rather than embellishments, adding warmth and personality without disturbing the room’s sense of balance.
The brief was clear: to create a home with depth, character and soul, where every material, texture and tone contributes to a larger narrative. Rather than relying on overt statements, the design communicates through layering, craftsmanship and a nuanced interplay of finishes that reveal themselves gradually over time.
This approach is perhaps most evident in the media wall opposite. Framed by slender brass and frosted glass fins, the television recedes into an architectural composition that feels more like a veil of light than a conventional feature wall. Gold accented seating and a stone topped coffee table ground the space, while a glazed brass framed partition offers a glimpse of the dining area beyond. Richly detailed yet carefully controlled, the room achieves a sense of quiet luxury, proving that maximalism can be expressive without becoming visually overwhelming.
The room reveals its richness gradually, rewarding a slower, more deliberate gaze. Suspended above, a sculptural looped pendant crafted from rope and brass introduces a note of drama, made all the more striking by the restraint of its surroundings. Rather than competing for attention, the remaining elements recede into a carefully balanced composition, allowing the lighting feature to become a natural focal point. Even the floor participates in this quiet choreography. A continuous dark inlay traces a graceful path across the stone surface, subtly directing movement and sightlines through the space. Thoughtfully integrated rather than overtly decorative, it reinforces the room’s sense of flow and cohesion while underscoring the project’s commitment to measured elegance.

The kitchen adopts a noticeably quieter presence. Composed of pale grey matte cabinetry, glossy charcoal upper shutters, and a quartz-toned countertop, the U-shaped layout prioritises efficiency, light, and ease of use. After the layered richness of the living and dining spaces, this restraint feels intentional. The room is designed not to command attention, but to support everyday rituals with calm confidence. In doing so, it demonstrates one of the home’s most compelling qualities: the understanding that sophistication often lies in knowing when to step back.
The daughter’s bedroom embraces imagination with unapologetic confidence. At its centre sits a striking circular bed upholstered in deep red velvet, elevated by a slender brass plinth and framed by a sculptural bow inspired headboard that transforms the piece into both furniture and focal point. The room balances playfulness with sophistication, creating an environment that feels whimsical without sacrificing refinement.
A custom mural forms the backdrop, depicting a young girl beneath a rainbow surrounded by a constellation of pastel stars. Above, a softly scalloped LED cove light traces the perimeter of the ceiling, evoking the gentle outline of a drifting cloud. Together, these elements create a dreamlike setting that feels immersive and deeply personal.
Rather than relying on themed decoration, the room builds its narrative through carefully crafted details, colour, and form. The result is a space that encourages imagination and self expression while remaining seamlessly connected to the home’s broader language of thoughtful design and bespoke craftsmanship.

Ombré curtains transition gently from soft yellow to blush pink, layered with sheer polka dot drapes that diffuse daylight into a warm, inviting glow. Against this delicate palette, a sculptural yellow lounge chair and matching ottoman introduce a bold accent, adding energy and contrast without overwhelming the space.

Integrated seamlessly within the bedroom, the study and dressing area extends the room’s narrative of playful sophistication. A pale yellow back painted glass backdrop lends brightness to the workspace, while a sculptural bouclé chair in a rich wine hue introduces depth and contrast. Behind, a series of arched white storage units rise with a quiet elegance, their curved profiles echoing the language established by the headboard and architectural archway elsewhere in the room.

The son’s bedroom adopts an entirely different character, one shaped by adventure, curiosity, and discovery. A dramatic astronaut mural set against a deep celestial backdrop becomes the room’s defining feature, creating an immersive environment that sparks the imagination. Anchoring the composition is a rust orange button tufted headboard, while a circular illuminated wall light evokes the feeling of a spacecraft porthole, subtly reinforcing the room’s exploratory theme.
The palette is rich yet grounded, layering warm umber, charcoal, and soft cream tones through textiles and furnishings.

In contrast, the master bedroom embraces a quieter and more restrained expression. Here, a striking slab of green quartzite veined with rust and cream becomes the focal point of the space, transforming the headboard wall into a work of natural art. Every surrounding element, from the upholstered bed and channel tufted bench to the brass and crystal sconces and softly patterned drapery, is intentionally understated. Together, they create a master suite defined by balance and material richness, where luxury is expressed through the confidence of a single, beautifully resolved gesture.

The walk in dressing room continues the master suite’s language of refinement through a carefully orchestrated play of light, reflection, and materiality. Brass framed mirrored wardrobes line either side of the space, visually extending its boundaries while lending a sense of depth and elegance. At the centre, a bespoke vanity is anchored by a softly backlit rounded rectangular mirror, creating a focal point that feels both functional and sculptural.
A subtle striped wall treatment in pale tones, punctuated with slender brass inlays, introduces texture and rhythm without overwhelming the compact footprint. Every surface has been considered not only for its aesthetic contribution but also for its ability to amplify light and expand perception.
Though modest in size, the room feels remarkably generous. Reflection becomes an architectural tool rather than a decorative device, transforming the dressing area into a space that feels open, luminous, and effortlessly sophisticated. The result is a room that demonstrates how thoughtful detailing and material precision can elevate even the most compact of spaces.

One of the home’s most versatile spaces demonstrates how functionality and character can coexist with ease. A cleverly integrated Murphy bed folds neatly between full height white wardrobes, allowing the room to transition effortlessly between guest accommodation, workspace, and private retreat. The composition is brought into focus by a pair of cobalt blue niches, whose vibrant presence punctuates the otherwise restrained palette and introduces a welcome sense of energy.

What emerges is a room that adapts gracefully to changing needs without compromising on design quality. Every element has been carefully considered to maximise flexibility while maintaining the home’s broader language of material richness, tailored detailing, and understated sophistication.

The parents’ bedroom embraces restraint with quiet confidence. A composition of fluted vertical panels, punctuated by slender mirrored inserts, forms the headboard wall and introduces a subtle sense of rhythm and depth. Anchoring the room is a tufted grey bed paired with a stone topped bedside table whose softened geometry echoes the space’s overall gentleness, creating an atmosphere that feels calm, balanced, and enduring.
The palette remains deliberately understated, allowing texture and proportion to take precedence over ornamentation.
Rather than relying on statement pieces, the room derives its character from careful restraint and thoughtful detailing. Every element feels measured and intentional, resulting in a space that offers comfort, elegance, and a sense of quiet retreat within the larger home.

The study, brings the home’s most pragmatic surface into view. A perforated metal backsplash, a chalkboard panel for equations, and open shelves stacked with model builds and reading material define the wall. It is a room engineered for daily use that still refuses to look generic.
Ultimately, Soul & Space presents a thoughtful interpretation of contemporary maximalism, one that favours curation over excess and depth over spectacle. The residence moves effortlessly between moments of drama and restraint, allowing each room to establish its own identity while contributing to a cohesive whole. In a design landscape often divided between stark minimalism and overt visual abundance, the project occupies a more nuanced middle ground. Here, layering becomes a disciplined design strategy rather than a decorative exercise, resulting in a home where every material, detail, and gesture feels purposeful, considered, and deeply connected to the larger narrative.
